See you June 14 to stump Trump

Are you frustrated that you can do so little to stop the run-away train wreck that roars out of the White House on an almost daily basis?

As I have written before, President Trump deserves honorary doctorate in B.S. His mastery of that domain is unmatched. His latest episode of going international with a totally false narrative was his ambush in the White House of the president of South Africa. Our high-minded leader displayed totally fake images of crosses and evidence of alleged “genocide” of white farmers in his guest’s country. He cared not, nor will he ever apologize for his untrue slur. The alleged images of slain white farmers were a complete fake.

You and I can’t make him confess his damaging B.S. to an allied country, but you can go to a West Bend “NO KINGS” rally Saturday, June 14 in West Bend to express your opposition.

West Bend has been the home of two previous rallies against Trump’s power and money grabs. Around 300 and 600 protesters showed up at the corner of South Main Street and Paradise Drive this spring. Indivisible, a non-partisan nationwide promoter of democracy, hopes to have 1000 rallies across the country on that date. Why that date for a massive uprising of citizens?

That’s the day that Trump has organized a huge military parade on Constitution Avenue in Washington D.C. to demonstrate his power to the rest of the world. That’s what Vladimir Putin does on May Day in Russia. That’s what Chinese President Xi Jinping does in Beijing. That’s what North Korean president Kim Jong Un does in North Korea.

The ostensible reason for the parade with tanks and fly-overs is a celebration of the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army. It is also Flag Day, an annual event to recall the American ideals that are symbolized in our flag.

But anyone who has studied Trump’s persona knows what really motivates the Donald. It’s his birthday.

You would think he would downplay another trip around the sun because he is starting to show his age in dramatic fashion. His physical energy is waning, but still impressive; he travels around the world and the country with amazing frequency.

But mentally he is lapsing into the same kind of dementia that President Biden displayed in his last year in office and spectacularly in his final debate against Trump.

Trump’s rambling speeches are word salad. His staff has reportedly just made the decision to cease verbatim accounts of his public talks.

His off-the-cuff utterances jump all over the place from subject to subject and make no sense. He speaks in incomplete sentences and his vocabulary is that of a young grade-schooler.

Speech experts cite the shift in Trump’s speeches by 2024 toward shorter sentences, more tangents, more repetition, more all-or-nothing thinking and more confusion of words and phrases. They add up to cognitive decline.

During the underwhelming 2024 presidential campaign, there was almost universal agreement across party lines that both candidates were too old to be seeking office. That assessment has played out in spades with Joe Biden. It is also playing out with Donald Trump, who should be stepping aside, but never will.

How can we make that happen? There is a possibility of a third impeachment by the House where a handful of Republicans could finally come to the defense of the country and join Democrats in an indictment of his performance.

But, even if the Senate found him guilty of incompetence or corruption, we would default to the vice president J.D. Vance. He’s no prize, but he’s not demented. And Vance might rise above the partisan GOP politics that is driving our economy and society into uncertainty and chaos.

At a minimum, a majority Americans can halt the assault on our democracy by reversing control of the House in November 2026. Just the very real threat of losing the House will temper the number of Republican candidates who suck up to Trump.

Hopefully, I will see you at the rally at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14. Take a homemade sign.

Mary Ann Rzeszutek, leader of a newly formed West Bend chapter of Indivisible, is hoping for the biggest crowd ever in West Bend. The national goal is to have more than a million people who will be singing protest songs, not “Happy Birthday, Donald” on June 14.
